The Broadway production of Tom Stoppard's Rock 'n' Roll will close on March 9, a production spokesperson confirmed. Although the original press announcements did not specify a closing date, the marquee at the Jacobs Theatre bills the show as a "limited engagement," and press materials since the end of the stagehands strike had listed March 9 as closing.
Rock 'n' Roll opened on November 4 with most of its original London cast, including Olivier Award winner Rufus Sewell, Brian Cox, Sinead Cusack, Nicole Ansari and Alice Eve, directed by Trevor Nunn. An ambitious look at the connection between rock music and revolution, Stoppard's play spans two countries England and Czechoslovakia, three generations and 22 turbulent years.
Rock 'n' Roll's weekly grosses ranged from $400,00 to $500,000 for the month of December out of a potential take of $733,475. For the week ending January 6, the play earned $445,912 at the box office and played to 77.35% of capacity.
